All About Indoor Table Tennis

All you need is two paddles, a ball and a table. That’s it. Let the fun begin! Indoor Table Tennis is a great way to get you moving. I know what I am talking about. I started playing table tennis when I was fifteen. You probably noticed, that I use the term ‘table-tennis’ and not ‘ping-pong’. Well, even though the basic concept of both variations is the same, there is indeed a huge difference. If you go on youtube for instance a and search for table tennis videos, you will find thousands of snippets or even whole matches illustrating what a powerful and strenuous sport it is. Just take this clip for example.

Focus not on the ball, but on the footwork. You will notice that playing table-tennis seriously requires you to move around a lot and quickly. That little ball can pick up speeds up to 100 mph and believe me, that is FAST. So you see there is in fact a difference between ping-pong and table tennis. So how do you take it to the next level and turn this fun after time activity into a real work out? Well, start slowly with some simple exercises. Here is how: try to hit the ball over the net 20 times in a row, without making a mistake. It’s important to understand, that these regular exercises are a crucial part of every serious table-tennis player. Of course, one you are more proficient, we are talking about a hundred shots without missing a ball in a very short amount of time. And that is just for warm-up.

This is exactly what we do before we get started playing matches. Believe me, to get up to that level of consistency and speed, it will take you many years of practice on a regular basis. Which means every day, ideally. But again, you got to start slowly. You and your opponent should start with the goal of hitting the ball 20 times over the net uninterruptedly. Forget about the speed. Do it slowly. Speed comes automatically as you get more consistent and confident. Once you can do 20 times, step it up to 50 times. That will take you some time. And then the next milestone would be a hundred times. I will talk about exercise variations a little later to give you some ideas. But first, grab your paddles and get started with indoor table tennis. It’s fun and workout at the same time!

As with all other kinds of sports, there are different playing styles used in indoor table tennis, or call it tactics if you will. We basically differentiate three main categories. Offender: players who will primarily use offensive strokes and try to keep the rallies as short as possible in order to score fast.
Defenders: those players are trying to ‘outlast’ their opponents by playing it save and trying to avoid unforced errors.
Allrounders: this player type uses both, offensive and defens...

Indoor Table Tennis Equipment

December 16, 2009
Let’s talk a little bit about the equipment you need for table tennis. You may think: “why on earth is this guy talking about a couple of paddles and a ping-pong ball? I can get all that stuff together for $ 5,00 at my deli around the corner!”. And you are right you can. Therefore, you might be surprised when I tell you that I used to spend about $ 200 a month on my table tennis equipment. Yes, that’s right. It was $ 200, and sometimes even more. I guess the same is true for all diffe...
